What to Wear

There is no dress code, but we recommend wearing something stretchy that you can easily move in but also something that doesn't completely hide your body. Hiding behind baggy clothing makes it difficult for you as well as for the instructor to see how your body is placed--and placement is a big deal in ballet!

Here are some suggestions for what you should wear to class:

 

For ladies:

• pair of ballet slippers
• They usually come in pink, white, black, or nude colors. Most women wear pink, but you can certainly choose what you like!
• You can also wear jazz shoes, lyrical shoes, or other soft-soled dance slippers with no heel
• If you're new to dance and are not sure if you'd like to invest in a pair of dance shoes, you can also wear socks.
• standard ballet dancewear
• Leotard, unitard, or bodysuit
• Tights (footed, footless, stirrup, or convertible)
• shorts/skirt (optional)
• If leotards aren't your thing, you could try:
• Yoga top or other form-fitting athletic top
• Leggings, dance pants, biker shorts

 

For gentlemen:

• pair of ballet slippers
• Most men wear white or black
• You can also wear jazz shoes, lyrical shoes, or other soft-soled dance slippers with no heel
• If you're new to dance and are not sure if you'd like to invest in a pair of dance shoes, you can also wear socks
• Standard ballet dancewear
• form-fitting short-sleeved V-neck T-shirt
• Dance belt
• Black tights
• If leotards aren't your thing, you could try:
• White T-shirt/undershirt that's not too baggy
• Leggings, dance pants, biker/running shorts
• Briefs or some sort of restraining sports garment if you're a boxer guy--you will be jumping around so plan accordingly

 

For performances:

• clean pink ballet slippers
• clean pink tights (footless or convertible)
• nude leotard
• This is to wear under your costume - it makes it much easier to change backstage in front of other people!
